Independent VAT repayment guide
How VAT repayments work
A plain-English overview of UK VAT repayment returns, HMRC checks and how this independent waiting-time tracker works.
When a VAT Return shows a repayment
GOV.UK explains that a repayment is due when the VAT charged to customers, shown in Box 3, is less than the VAT paid on purchases, shown in Box 4. The repayment amount is the figure shown in Box 5.
What happens after submission
HMRC processes most repayments automatically. It may check whether the return is accurate and whether the amount being repaid is correct. If more information is needed, HMRC may contact the business, and the repayment can take longer.
How payment is made
GOV.UK says repayments go directly to the bank account held for the repayment when HMRC has the relevant bank details. Otherwise, HMRC may send a cheque. Check the current official VAT repayment guidance for full details.
What this independent tracker adds
The tracker lets users contribute a submission month, broad value band, region, status and limited date information. It does not ask for names, contact details, VAT numbers, exact amounts, documents or free-text case allegations.
Only privacy-protecting aggregate statistics are public. Small samples are suppressed, and the recently launched dataset is currently limited. The tracker cannot check a repayment or replace HMRC guidance.
